How to take a break from your phone
Feeds are built to never end, so cutting down is hard by design, not because you're weak. What actually works, and why being off social media is fine.

If cutting down on your phone feels hard, that’s not you being weak. Feeds are built to never end, so “I’ll just check it” has no natural stopping point. That’s the design. Here’s how to get round it.
Why it’s hard
A feed never finishes. There’s always one more post, and the app is built so the next one loads before you’ve decided to stop. Knowing that is half the battle: it’s the design pulling you back, not a lack of willpower.
Cut-downs that actually work
- Charge it outside your bedroom, so it isn’t the last thing you touch at night or the first in the morning.
- Turn off notifications. Most of the pull is the buzz, not the thing itself.
- Leave it in another room while you do homework.
- Agree phone-free times with a mate, so you’re not the only one going quiet.
The social question, answered straight
Plenty of people your age aren’t on social media. The things that actually matter still reach you, in person the next day. The first week or two can genuinely feel like missing out, and then it mostly fades by the third week.
The easiest version
The simple phones we recommend run no apps and no social media at all, so on one of those there’s nothing to cut down on. The phone does the break for you.
